The Rise of AI Technology and We?
Welcome Seawolves!
I am so excited to start a new journey towards technology society with you, guys.
Throughout this blog, I will scrutinize innovative and astounding technologies that change our lives, their applications, and even my thoughts on those. Hope you guys get some knowledge and be more confident in this Gen-Z society!
I am also highly interested in Artificial Intelligence (AI) as well as its surrounding controversies--- that means, I will mainly discuss AI and its amazing utilization.
Alright! Today, I will introduce about the AI. There would be basic information in terms of 5W.
The Coin of the term: Artificial Intelligence
According to the Tableau website, the authors well-organized the timeline of AI from the coin of the term to its boom: the background stories. If you want to deep-dive in AI, it would be best to skim over the website. But, yes, I know I know. You don't have time to do that---so I summarize the content. Just let me explain key points:)
Have you ever watched the film "Imitation Game" starring Benedict Cumberbatch?
Actually, in this movie, we can see the first form of machine intelligence. The original source for the material is "Computer Machinery and Intelligence" authored by Alan Turing, a computer scientist and mathematician in the United Kingdom. There was a machine called "Turing Test" which was the coin of the term AI. It was the year 1950.
Then, we left one question. Okay, it is about the coin, but how about the genuine source of the AI technology? ---- It was from a program to play checkers in 1952. The program was the first to learn the game independently. Since then, there have been numerous machines to discipline other different games and even competitions with champions. If I refer to one case in South Korea, there was 'Alpago'.
In 1955, there was the first use of the term AI by John McCarthy at Dartmouth University. He also created the first programming language after 3 years. It led to the advent of machine learning, expert systems, chatbots, and even deep learning by other promising scientists.
However, at that time, AI was not popular, getting the spotlight, and even considered something important to open a new window.
AI BOOM
AI Boom defines the period in which technology began to get attention from the world and developed rapidly. Not only in the United States but also in other countries such as Japan, AI technology has become appreciated. It was 1980~1987. There was the first conference of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence at Standford, which means its significance and brings promise among scientists. Otherwise, the Japanese government invested $850 million in the first-generation computer project to seek global cooperation to compete with IBM. It was the beginning of the fierce technology war between nations.
Nevertheless, the world was confronted with the AI winter ---- consumers didn't need the technology in their daily lives which led to low investment in relatable research projects and science projects.
And NOW
I consider that there was no need to emphasize the advantages of AI and its surprising adoption in the world. It's because we all already feel in our skin. Even when we do our assignments, I assure you, that somebody in this EST325 class will use Chat GPT or Google Bard. Even for me, I always use them. I also believe that its role has expanded very fast and affected our lives in every detail. We are responsible for knowing how to react, utilize, and not be replaced by AI. I will discuss those later.
Hey Subin, your blog did a excellent job summarizing the history of AI technology! I wasn't aware of the initial root where the terminology of Artificial Intelligence came from but now I know! I believe AI is a very hot topic in our society! A lot of people (including myself) are aware of AI, but don't know much about it. It really did BOOM out of nowhere. Thanks to your blog, I feel equipped with better knowledge to survive in the AI-centered society we live in today!
ReplyDeleteHi Subin! I really enjoyed your blog. Ever since the emergence of AI chatbots, I've been completely obsessed with this new technology. It was interesting to read through the history of AI you wrote about since I really didn't know the detailed historical context of AI development. You mentioned that "We are responsible for knowing how to react, utilize, and not be replaced by AI." As a user of ChatGPT as well, I also agree with having the responsibility not to be replaced by AI. However, sometimes I feel overwhelmed by how smart AI can be, and I think that AI technology does need regulations and policies as it develops over time. Since I'm particularly interested in LLM (Large Language Model), which is the base technology of ChatGPT, I'm looking forward to your next post about AI :)
ReplyDeleteHi Subin, I think your breakdown of the rise of AI technology is insightful. I found it interesting how AI technologies like Chat GPT and Google Bard have become such integral parts of our lives. I appreciate your emphasis on the importance of understanding AI's implications and ensuring responsible utilization. Looking forward to reading more interesting posts from you!
ReplyDeleteHello Subin. I think your blog post offered great insight into the basics of Artificial Intelligence and using real world scenarios to illustrate how they pertain to our lives on an individual level. With the world relying on technology such as Internet and AI more and more, I agree that the use of AI should not mean that it makes us replaceable. Rapid development of chatGPT and other forms of AI have caused us to become less "intelligent" in a sense that we rely on searching things up instead of trying to get to the root issue of what I am not doing/ doing wrong, in the example of doing assignments for courses. Thank you for sharing your knowledge, and I'm hoping to see more insightful and relatable stories from you in your future posts as well!
