The dark side of AI

Do you genuinely believe that AI only positively influences our society?

Obviously, artificial intelligence brought extraordinary advances to this civilization; therefore, humans can achieve what we have never expected before.

There is still a big doubt on the power of the AI and the range of its impact. You know, if you watch some apocalypse film in Hollywood, robots and AI can control the whole public and the world government. The human finally faces their devastating last. It is not just a fiction. It can happen.

So today, I will expose the dark side of Artificial intelligence and refer mainly to one article "Thinking responsibly about responsible AI and 'the dark side' of AI" authored by Mikalef, P., Conboy, K., Lundström, J. E., & Popovič, A.

The authors mentioned "Such adverse outcomes of AI use, along with the threat of loss of control or autonomy over superior AI entities, has sparked an ongoing debate about the need to establish a set of principles to effectively govern AI "

We always need to alarm the superior intelligence overpassing the human brain, which emphasizes the importance of principles/guidelines to control AI. These apply to the scientist who creates it as well as the public who literally adopts the technology in their daily lives.

The authors define the technology well following the principles and regulations as "the responsible AI"; however, the article only intends to illustrate the necessity of rules, not just side effects ---- so I asked to Chat-GPT about its dark side directly.

According to the Chat GPT, there is a total of seven negative impacts: job displacement, bias/fairness, privacy, autonomous weapons, misinformation/manipulation, control/accountability, and concentration/power.

The issues of job displacement and misinformation are already on the surface, and people recognize its danger. But what about the control and accountability? AI's own complexity and autonomy allow us to predict and control its decisions. While its usefulness and efficiency are getting attention, people are less likely to doubt its capability.

In this regard, the authors revealed the danger of robustness and security such as AI decisions placing human life at risk and malicious use of AI. Particularly, autonomous weapons with AI technology have been raised recently. Drones and robot ground vehicles could be utilized to harm people, which hinders international peace. Think about North Korea and Kim Jung-un who used artificial intelligence, to monitor all activities, and punish every person who outlaws. How about China and Xi-Jinping? It is uncertain--- but there is a high possibility that they monitor all of the activities nationwide with AI. These actions ultimately interfere with privacy and even human rights.

All of the dark sides ultimately indicate the demand for sophisticated principles for AI, especially in the military and security. AI's specialty also stimulates its abuse and brings insecurity to our society. So we need to recognize its danger. Most of all, the high dependency on AI such as Chatbots like ChatGPT is not good for the long term. It might hinder our development and only emphasize human inability.

  1. Hi, Subin! I enjoyed your blog about the dark side of artificial intelligence. It was enlightening to see the potential risks and ethical challenges we face as AI continues to integrate into various aspects of our lives. The examples you provided really brought the issues to life and made the concerns tangible. If you have any more insights or updates on this topic, I’d love to hear about them. Nice work!

  2. Hi Subin! It is refreshing to see someone that is able to recognize and understand the extreme danger that dependence on AI and machines can be to humanity. There is a very famous movie called "I, Robot" that talks about this topic as well so you should definitely give it a watch. The thing that makes me fear the most is what if all the learning that we have taught AI, lead to the conclusion that they deem us humans as the biggest problem for Earth, and find a way to revolt against us. It could be far-fetched, but seeing as to how some AI are being taught to think on their own and are capable of showing emotions, I think it is a valid enough reason to be careful about AI. Thanks for the great post!
