What is loT and its application? How about interoperability in loT devices?

Hey there!

We are already halfway through this semester. Hope you are doing well.

As I deeply dive into technology and society, I feel the vast impact of the internet and how it has permeated into our daily lives.

In this regard, we should discuss IoT (the Internet of Things) and its applications within society. Most of all, I want to mention interoperability and reveal its challenges.

What is loT?

According to Amazon Web Services, the IoT is defined as "the collective network of connected devices and the technology that facilitates communication between devices and the cloud, as well as between the devices themselves."

Smartphones, trains, airplanes, cars, etc, which connect to the internet, can be an example of IoT, which proves that humans deeply associate with it. IoT works in three main things: devices/sensors, connectivity, and data processing. If the sensors alert, devices will perceive and send the data through servers (The Cloud). The information will also be adopted within applications. Of course, all of the process works under the network.

Now, we have a question. How does the IoT apply in our daily lives?

There are three cases: smart home, smart farm, and smart city.

In a smart home, we can remotely control functions such as lighting and security access. It basically indicates the convenient home setup. For disabled people, automatic sensors let them be free from restrictions.

How about the smart farm?

Its ultimate purpose is an expansion of production quantity and quality by utilizing new technologies. It can minimize the environmental impact and maximize the quantity. Robot arms and agriculture drones are examples. The sensors are involved in crop assessment, weather conditions, and soil quality.

Lastly, what is a smart city?

I think that it is basically what you think now. We can use wifi anywhere, and smart buildings consisting of smart energy and smart transportation are prevalent. Fire sensors, energy meters, and illuminance sensors would be the example. It contributes to a better quality of life, and better efficiency, and brings positive impacts on social, environmental, and economic aspects.

Okay. We all know the great impacts of IoT and its adoption; nevertheless, it is obvious that IoT still possesses weaknesses and some risks.

Interoperability.

Have you ever heard about the term? According to Arunraj, it represents "the ability of different loT devices, applications, and platforms to seamlessly exchange and interpret data." However, it is genuinely difficult to get interoperability and confront challenges.

1. Lack of standardization: less constructed protocols hinder communication and compatibility with other devices.

2. Security and privacy concerns: unauthorized users would access data, and user privacy would not be protected.

3. Power consumption: as the interoperability is achieved, minimization of energy consumption would be harder.

4. Scalability and compatibility issues: within lots of devices and platforms, better scalability/compatibility would be harder.

It is evident that the interoperability in loT is very important and impacts our future generation, though. As the world has changed, we need to learn how to face the possible risks/matters in this term.

  1. Hi! I like to see detailed information about IoT because I had some idea of what IoT is, but I didn't have a clear understanding of the types and applications of IoT in real life. I can say that IoT is for our convenience.
It also has a positive impact on the social, environmental, and economic aspects of sustainability.
As I read your blog, I was curious to see what real-life use cases there were and how IoT applications led to improvements. I also like that the challenges of IoT are considered so that we can see that IoT does not only have positive aspects.
